At Vancouver's Siggraph conference we have already seen Intel demo DirectX 12 and even the next generation of OpenGL be announced. Now AMD's Gaming Scientist Richard Huddy has "done a great deal of work" with the Khronos Group, the curators of the OpenGL API and has given them unfettered access to Mantle saying, "this is how we do it. If you want to take the same approach go ahead".

As some of you will already have heard the next ganeration of OpenGL, or "OpenGL Next" as Richard Huddy calls it, is a from the ground up rewrite of the API which aims to greatly reduce overhead and give developers more access and control over the hardware.

Essentially this means that OpenGL will be moving in the same direction as Mantle and DirectX 12 has before them, meaning all 3 big gaming APIs will be offering reduced overhead and greater levels of hardware access in the future. This undoubtedly is a great thing for PC gaming, allowing lower spec machines to perform better with less wasted power and also allow developers to further push the envelope, especially when it comes to CPU based tasks.

While we can easily say that Mantle has defined the direction DirectX 12 and OpenGL is going, with Huddy claiming that AMD worked Closely with Microsoft and Khronos group to develop them, Huddy didn't say how closely OpenGL Next and DirectX 12 might mirror Mantle. Huddy did say that Khronos is free to take as many pages as it wants out of Mantle's playbook, and AMD will impose no restrictions, nor will it charge any licensing fees upon them on doing so.

The future of Graphics APIs looks like a future with very efficient CPU usage across the board, a great thing for more budget minded gamers and the non-overclockers among us.

Oh I know I've known about him for quite a few years, Probably while you were celebrating your 8th birthday *and writing a review of your birthday cake * I was reading about him

But Gaming Scientist ? Sounds very childish, Lead game researcher would of been far better, Stuff like this is why people don't take AMD seriously, A good example being their last "Core" video Quote

Lots of games use the OpenGL API, pretty much every on Linux/ Mac game, lots of the older valve games, Half life, Counter strike.Quote

Usually smaller studios that support multiple platforms will use an OpenGL renderer as they can't afford to support both DirectX and OpenGL for non-consolde builds.Quote

The openness of AMD allowing Khronos to pretty much use them to build an API is very interesting. No restrictions? Shocker. Nvidia is looking like a bigger asshole these days with all the IP crap. Sure Nvidia don't need to get involved with building APIs but then again if AMD is helping DX12/OpenGL development then i'm sure as they will try to get their products to perform better for it, whether its on the software or hardware side before Nvidia can.Quote

form what little i know about opengl. the problem is basically legacy support.
the way i under stand it because its open source people just add bits to it and then it gets approved, and then some one els adds to it because they need it to work like this.
then sone one els does similar. and now you end up with an api full of old and redundant code which makes it a huge pain to code for.

so imo all of the major players intel nvidia amd and so on. should just get to work on it together clean it all up get rid of all the fluff. just have it all as clean as possible with the features they all want. and make coding for it easier.
i kind of doubt they will though as that just sounds like spending money. and its a long term game.Quote
