Gigabyte updates select Z170 motherboards to support Thunderbolt 3

Gigabyte has announced that several select Z170 motherboard will now support Thunderbolt 3 thanks to a new BIOS update, allowing the board’s Thunderbolt 3 port to support 40Gb/s speeds, rather than USB 3.1 20Gb/s speeds.

The motherboards that have been updated will include the Gagabyte Z170X-Gaming G1, Z170X-Gaming GT and the Z170X-Gaming 7. At launch this motherboard had all the required hardware to support Thunderbolt 3, but it lacked certification, meaning that the motherboard could only be advertised as supporting USB 3.1 speeds, since Thunderbolt 3 uses the same type-c connector as USB 3.1.

To unlock your motherboards Thunderbolt 3 support all that you need to do is to update your BIOS to the newest version, which will be available on the Gigabyte website.

With such a large amount of bandwidth available on Thunderbolt 3 it will allow users to daisy chain several docks and other future Thunderbolt devices, though if you do not wish to use Thunderbolt 3 you can very easily settle for USB 3.1 speeds and use more traditional devices.
