New HTC Vive headsets are now 15% lighter than the original launch model, making new HTC Vive headsets lighter than the Oculus Rift.

These weight changes are due to manufacturing improvements and component changes that have taken place over the past year, changing the weight of the headset from 550 grams to 468 grams. This reduction in mass fixes one of the HTC Vive’s biggest criticisms, that the headset was front heavy and uncomfortable to use. These new changes address this issue by reducing the weight of the headset, which should deliver users a more comfortable gaming experience.

This announcement from HTC confirms that there is now “revised HTC Vive” in the works, with HTC simply rolling out minor improvements to their headset over time at a production level, which have all added up to create some noteworthy reduction in mass.

AN HTC spokesperson has stated in a recent discussion with Road to VR, that they are constantly looking for ways to improve their VR headset in terms of comfort and durability. With HTC’s recent changes, new HTC Vive headsets are now lighter than the Oculus Rift, giving them a huge competitive advantage when combined with their “room scale” VR technology.

We are always looking to improve the core Vive experience in terms of comfort and durability. We’ve made several improvements since launch including a new 3-in-1 cable,

We’ve also made smaller improvements to the weight due to component swaps and improvements in manufacturing. This has resulted in a 15% decrease since the Vive PRE.

Sadly these changes have resulted in a strange problem for VR newcomers, as right now there in so way of knowing how recently your headset has been manufactured, or if your headset includes these mass reductions at the time of purchase.

This means that those who buy a new HTC Vive headset have no way of knowing that their headset is a “new model”, or a release model that has been sitting on the shelf for the past year.
