Have Asus been sniffing something too much?

Asus F6V Scented LaptopWe are all for innovation and unique ideas within the world of IT, and Asus have come up with a very unique idea but first let's get the most obvious question out of the way regarding this one- WTF? This must be deserving of the 'gimmick of the year' awards, surely?

Pushing the boundaries of laptop design, they have come up with the idea of giving some of their laptops a scent, along with fancy paint jobs. The laptops in question are from the F6 range and are available in four different aromas and designs, Floral Blossom, Musky Black, Morning Dew, and Aqua Ocean.

There is only one model within the F6 range at the moment, the F6V, with the following specifications:

  • Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology
    - Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9400/P8600/P8400
    - Mobile Intel® PM45 Express Chipset
    - Intel® WiFi Link 5100AGN Network Connection
  • Genuine Windows Vista®
    - Genuine Ultimate
    - Genuine Business
    - Genuine Home Premium/Home basic
  • DDRII-667/800 DRAM support, up to 4GB
  • 13.3” WXGA Color Shine LCD
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470, external 256MB DDR2 VRAM
  • SATA 120/160/250/320GB
  • 31.2 x 23.19 x 3.2-3.52cm
Here's what Asus have to say on each design/scent:

Floral Blossom
In glorious pink, this design evokes the imagery of a summer party, leaving the somber feel of conventional laptop designs far behind with its cheerful, floral motif and a floral scent – the most attractive laptop for ladies!
Musky Black
Boasting a glossy black surface emblazoned with a colorful motif inspired by extreme sports and graffiti art, this model emanates power, daring, and energy with its playfulness and musky scent.
Morning Dew
Realized in a pastel green hue, this graphic motif is inspired by the love and respect for nature. Return to the embrace of Mother Nature for a crisp and refreshing awakening of the senses whenever you work on your notebook.
Aqua Ocean
The freedom afforded by a boundless expanse of sky and the energy of breaking waves are captured perfectly on the cover of this notebook. The matching invigorating aquatic scent will keep your days energized!

Asus have said that the lifespan of the fragrance depends on actual usage, so try not to sniff it too much!

One case in the months that the 3G has been out. Hardly a problem, this can be classified as a random act of electronic suicide.

TBH i never charge anything overnight unless I have to. At a place I used to work, one of our engineers lost part of his house to a Dell power pack that caught fire over night when he was charging his laptop.

I have a tendancy to sleep with my phone on charge under my pillow (so I don't have to get out of bed to turn the alarm off), luckily its not a ***** iPhone! :p

I'd rather smother molten hot jam all over my testacles than own one. :o

Without knowing what sort of conditions the user has kept his stuff in and without further examination, it`s hard to tell if it`s `abuse` or "normal wear and tear". The latter would be down to Apple, the former down to the user.

We have had Dell incidents, mostly related to users jamming in USB stuff that the pc isn`t designed for and they shouldn`t be using. Not all pcs have a strong USB capability, particularly for new stuff. Normally the overloading of the power line for the usb rail. If ur lucky it`ll blow something, if ur not it`ll melt something.

Users aren`t always honest with u too, which is unfortunate - it`s not like we`re going to send them to the headmasters or something, and it`s not like we can single users out for damage - it just helps diagnosing things.

most phones if left on charge for a long period of time have a power cut feature, that stop the current charging the phone once the battery is full.

my W880i charges in about an hour an a half then goes cold again.
