We've been given an exclusive look around MSI's latest card; the R9 290X Lightning edition. We previously saw the Lightning cooler on the GTX 780 and we were incredibly impressed with the amount of effort MSI had gone through in order to produce a card capable of achieving great overclocks through an impressive power delivery system. The R9 290X Lightning is no different to that, as it keeps the same looks as the previous Lightning cards, along with the goal to achieve world record overclocks.
As we can see, the 290X Lightning comes very well packaged. It comes with the standard box you see on the outside, but inside that we find another box with gold coloured lettering. Inside this, we find accessories, a certificate of authenticity, along with a bracket for use with dry ice for extreme cooling. If we lift up the foam we find the card enclosed in an anti-static bag.
The Card Itself
The first thing you notice is the incredibly large heatsink and cooling solution, with three fans. We think the Lightning series of cards are some of the best looking cards on the market and match perfectly with MSI's Mpower and Xpower motherboards. On the top of the card, we find dual 8pin power connectors plus another 6 pin power connections, which gives an indication as to just how much effort MSI have put into the power delivery for this card. The 290X Lightning comes with a strong backplate which not only looks great, but also provides support for the heavy cooler. The connections on the I/O ports are all gold plated which really shows just how high quality this card is.
We can't provide and specifics about the card itself, but we will be with you with a full article and review over the next few days.
