Microsoft reportedly close to acquiring Obsidian Entertainment

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that five new developers were joining Microsoft Games Studios, confirming their acquisitions of Playground Games, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games while also forming a new studio called The Initiative.

This development effort is designed to bolster the company’s exclusive games library, a vital resource as the Industry prepares for next-generation hardware, but it appears as if Microsoft’s acquisition efforts are not over, assuming that today’s rumours are correct.

Kotaku has released a report that claims that Microsoft is finalising a deal to acquire Obsidian Entertainment, who is well known for creating Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Fallout: New Vegas as well as their crowdfunded Pillars of Eternity series. One source on the matter stated that the deal is “a matter of when, not if”, showcasing a level of confidence that the proposed agreement will come into fruition.

Obsidian Entertainment is a relatively small developer, one which would no doubt benefit from the financial backing of Microsoft, giving the studio the resources they need to invest in a large-scale 3D RPG.

If Kotaku’s report is correct, we can expect Microsoft to officially announce the deal in the near future, with Microsoft’s planned X018 acting as a prime venue for the official announcement. X018 is set to take place on November 10th at the Xbox FanFest in Mexico City.
