Nintendo Wii and Gamecube classics are coming to the Nvidia Shield in China

Nvidia has officially confirmed that several Nintendo Wii and Gamecube titles will be coming to the Nvidia Shield in China, with New Super Mario Bros Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Punch-Out releasing on the platform today with 1080p visuals. Additional titles like Super Mario Galaxy will be “coming soon” to the platform, though sadly none of these cames will be releasing outside of China.

Nvidia and Nintendo have been working together for quite some time, with Nintendo using Nvidia-made Tegra SOCs in their new Switch Console. It is likely that these Wii/Gamecube games will also be releasing on the Nintendo Switch in the near future, with the Shield delivering the Chinese market with their first official opportunity to ever play these games outside of foreign imports.

Below is a message from Nvidia’s PR team, which confirms that these game are coming to the Sheild with resolutions of 1080p, though sadly these releases will be exclusive to China’s version of the Nvidia Shield.

Extending the business relationship that brought NVIDIA technology to Nintendo Switch, some of Nintendo’s most beloved Wii and Nintendo GameCube titles are officially headed to China for the first time. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and PUNCH-OUT!! are remastered in 1080p and available on the China version of NVIDIA SHIELD, released today.

SHIELD owners in China will be able to download and play select Wii and Nintendo GameCube titles, with others coming soon – among them, Super Mario Galaxy. These amazing games have been provided to NVIDIA under license.

Customized for the China market, SHIELD is a completely localized device, with local content, store, search and more. SHIELD will bring Chinese customers a brand-new experience in gaming, AI and home entertainment with Baidu’s DuerOS conversational AI system and abundant entertainment options from iQIYI.

The Nintendo Switch is reportedly getting support for Gamecube games in the near future, offering a form of backwards compatibility on the platform. Given the fact that the Nvidia Sheild utilises a similar SOC to Nintendo’s latest console it is likely that several Gamecube games are already ready to launch on the Nintendo Switch.
