Microsoft’s next major Windows 10 upgrade will install faster
Microsoft is aware of this and has worked hard to decrease system downtime thanks to their new feature update model, which can now handle more of the update process while the system is online, which allowing the PC to be used at the same time. This new update model shortens any potential downtime during the Windows upgrade process, with Microsoft’s next feature update shortening the average offline time from 82 minutes (on last April’s Creators Update) to 30 minutes.
Windows 10 is set to receive two major feature updates every year from Microsoft, adding new features bi-annually to enhance the Windows 10 experience. These changes will simplify the upgrading process for Windows 10 users, making excessive downtime less of a factor.
Let’s get to the exciting news — we’ve made a lot of progress in reducing the offline time
To achieve this, we moved portions of the work done during the offline phases and placed it in the online phase. Because of these changes, the average offline time for the Fall Creator’s Update released last October has dropped to 51 minutes, a 38% improvement! But we didn’t stop there. We’ve done additional work in the upcoming Windows release to move portions of migration operations to the online phase as well. This has resulted in an overall reduction of offline time when installing builds in the Insiders Program to an average of 30 minutes. That’s a reduction of 63% from the Creators Update!
The downside of Microsoft’s changes is that the online portion of the updating process will take longer to complete, though the key thing here is that your PC is still usable in this state, making this a marked improvement over the old model. Even so, 30 minutes is still a long time which will require pre-planning from users, though at least it is a lot shorter than 82 minutes, enough time to watch a feature-length film.
