Since Chrome 64 users have been able to mute website, which has alleviated the problems posed by autoplaying, though Chrome 66 will make this process automatic, preventing these videos from automatically playing altogether, unless users show interest in them. Another benefit of this method will be reduced data/bandwidth usage, which will be great news for anyone with a limited data plan.
Chrome 66 is currently available in beta, which allows these functions to be tried out today on desktop and mobile clients, though these functions will not be delivered to mainline Chrome users until later this year.
Autoplay is now allowed only when either the media won’t play sound, after the user clicks or taps on the site, or (on desktop) if the user has previously shown an interest in media on the site.
