Avalanche showcases their Just Cause 4 APEX engine

Square Enix and Avalanche Studios have officially revealed Just Cause 4, a sequel to Just Cause 3 which will feature enhanced features, improved visuals, a smarter enemy AI and 100 square kilometres of South American countryside to explore.

At the E3 PC Gaming show, Avalanche showcased their new APEX engine, which has received a significant overhaul since the release of Just Cause 3, delivering gamers “unrivalled draw distances”, an improved HDR lighting engine, dynamic weather effects, higher fidelity destruction and more.

Just Cause 3 proved to be quite a performance hog on both PCs and consoles, particularly in areas with lots of explosions, environmental destruction and other compute-intensive effects. With this in mind, we hope that Avalanche’s latest tweaks to their APEX Engine can allow Just Cause 3 to run better than its predecessor, even with its improved visual feature set.

Just Cause 4 is currently set to release on December 4th on PC, Xbox One and PS4, which means that this enhanced visual feature set is expected to run in the same hardware that already struggles with Just Cause 3. Let’s hope that APEX has become more computationally efficient, as what’s the point of improved visuals if they come at the expense of stable performance.
