At Gamescom 2018, Ubisoft revealed The Settlers, a reimagining of the real-time strategy series that has been with us since 1993, with its most recent iteration, The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom, releasing in 2010.

In Fall 2019, Ubisoft plans to bring the series back from the depths of obscurity, with developer Blue Bytes leading the charge. Blue Bytes is the German studio that developed most of The Settlers’ previous iterations. In recent history, Blue Bytes is better known for the Anno series of strategy games.

The Settlers latest outing will make use of Ubisoft’s Snowdrop Engine, which is best known for Massive Entertainment’s The Division, showcasing the versatility of Snowdrop as a gaming platform. Nintendo fans may remember that Mario & Rabbits Kingdom Battle also uses Snowdrop, making Snowdrop seem like a more general purpose engine than other Ubisoft engines like Dunia and AnvilNext.

Settlers is a slow-paced real-time strategy game, where players build a strong economy, overcome their rivals with either military or cultural strengths and forge for themselves a strong civilisation.

Fans of the original Settlers series should know that Ubisoft plans to release The Settlers History Collection, which will include all seven of the series’ existing titles, remastered for modern operating systems with graphical enhancements and functional multiplayer. The Settlers’ Historical Editions will be available separately or as part of a seven-game bundle on November 15th 2018.
