Pioneer has exited the PC optical disc market

The physical media market has lost a major player – Pioneer has exited the PC optical media business

If you are a fan of optical drives, today isn’t a good day for you. Pioneer has officially exited the PC optical disc drive market. After 30 years of making PC disk drives, Pioneer has exited the business, selling its Pioneer Digital Design and Manufacturing (PDDM) subsidiary to China’s Shanxi Lightchain Technology Industrial Development Co.

From now on, Pioneer will be focused on automotive electronics. This means that Pioneer will still be selling CD players for automotive use. However, Pioneer’s days as a leading optical disc drive manufacturer are finished. This news comes mere months after Sony exited the recordable Blu-Ray media market.

Sadly, optical media has fallen in popularity, making it less profitable to design and manufacture new optical disc drives. Most PC users no longer use optical media. Optical media hasn’t been a popular data storage format for well over a decade. We are now in the era of the digital download, and optical media has become increasingly rare. When was the last time you got a driver CD with any new PC hardware?

Pioneer’s most recently released optical disk drive is the BDR-X13U-X BDXL, which was released in 2024. Pioneer has produced optical disk drives for over 30 years. Soon, the world’s supply of Pioneer optical disk drives will dry up, bringing an end to what was once an optical media giant.
