AMD prepares to ship its MI308 GPU to China following US restrictions reversal

AMD’s getting ready to resume shipments of its MI308 AI GPUs to China

Following Nvidia’s announcement that it will soon restart H20 GPU shipments to China, AMD has confirmed that it is getting ready to resume shipments of its own AI GPUs to the region. This means that AMD will soon be shipping its MI308 AI accelerator to China, boosting its AI revenues.

These changes are happening as US lawmakers have decided to lift some of their AI export restrictions. This change followed a high-profile meeting between Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, and U.S. President Donald Trump. This move will give China access to powerful AI acceleration hardware from the US, generating billions for chipmakers. However, exports of AMD and Nvidia’s top AI chips are still restricted.

Nvidia’s H20 and AMD’s MI308 accelerators were both designed specifically for the Chinese market. Exports of both AI accelerators were banned in April. AMD claimed that this ban would cost the company $800 million. Now, AMD can sell these GPUs once export licenses are approved.

We were recently informed by the Department of Commerce that license applications to export MI308 products to China will be moving forward for review.

Both AMD and Nvidia will see their revenues boosted by the US’ loosened AI export restrictions. Chipmakers have argued that allowing AI sales to China will ensure that US technology defines the AI market. In theory, this move will discourage Chinese companies from investing in Chinese AI hardware, harming the nation’s tech sector.
