OpenAI partners with AMD to deploy 6 Gigawatts of AI hardware

OpenAI’s deal with AMD could see them own almost 10% of the company

OpenAI has just entered a large-scale partnership with AMD, which will see it purchase billions of dollars in AI infrastructure. In total, the deal will see OpenAI install 6 gigawatts of next-generation AI hardware. In H2 2026, AMD will deliver their first gigawatt deployment, which will include AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs.

This agreement will see OpenAI become a core strategic partner of AMD. This will see OpenAI and AMD share technical expertise and optimise their hardware/software roadmaps. This will help AMD develop stronger AI hardware, allowing OpenAI to optimise its use of this hardware.

As part of this deal, OpenAI is granted a warrant to purchase 160 million shares of AMD common stock. This would give OpenAI a 10% stake in AMD. This warrant is based on certain milestones, which are based on the amount of AMD computing power that OpenAI deploys. This incentivises OpenAI to invest in AMD equipment, as it will grant them valuable AMD shares.

This deal has already seen AMD’s shares increase in value by 35% in premarket trading. This deal puts to rest fears that OpenAI would exclusively use Nvidia hardware following their $100 billion deal.

This AMD/OpenAI pertnership is a big deal

This deal is a huge boost for AMD, as it secures billions in sales for its AI hardware. Furthermore, it is a massive vote of confidence for AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 AI GPU. You don’t invest in 1GW of AI hardware unless that hardware is good.

What remains to be seen is if OpenAI can deliver on its commitments. Between AMD and Nvidia, OpenAI has committed to investing in 16 GW of AI infrastructure. Both deals require OpenAI to reach certain deployment thresholds to get the most from each deal. If OpenAI doesn’t deploy enough hardware, it won’t get AMD’s warranted shares. If OpenAI doesn’t deploy enough Nvidia hardware, it won’t get Nvidia’s extra investment.

With today’s deal, AMD has proven that the AI hardware market isn’t a one-horse race. This deal proves the viability of AMD AI hardware and AMD’s ability to create Gigawatt-scale deployments. However, it remains to be seen how OpenAI will be able to pay for all of this hardware.
