Windows 11 update enables 1000 Hz+ monitors

Microsoft is getting ready for the era of hyper-fast gaming displays

With its newest Windows Insider build, Microsoft has enabled support for refresh rates above 1000 Hz. With builds 26100.8106 and 26200.8106, Windows 11 Insiders can now utilise screens that push past the kHz barrier.

According to Blur Busters, who have pushed for this support, Windows 11 now supports displays up to 5000 Hz. This should be enough to support high refresh rate displays for the next decade.

I just put a change in that will raise the limit to 5000 Hz on retail Windows 24H2 and later.

It should be available in Windows Insider Dev channel soon and will rollout to retail…

Microsoft to Blur Busters

According to Blur Busters, several display manufacturers are currently working on 2,000 Hz displays that they plan to launch in 2030. This means the next few years should see display refresh rates double from today’s levels.

With 1000 Hz displays becoming available this year, it is unsurprising that Microsoft has raised their display support limits. 5000 Hz monitor support should be sufficient to keep display manufacturers happy for the foreseeable future.

High refresh rates help deliver clearer images with less blur and higher levels of perceived detail. This is one of the reasons why Nvidia, Intel, and AMD have all invested in Frame Generation technologies. When used with high refresh rate displays, these technologies enable higher levels of image clarity in motion, which can transform fast-paced games.
