Sony rolls out “Improved PSSR” to a wave of PS5 Pro games

Sony’s upgraded PSSR tech is now available in several PlayStation 5 Pro games

Sony has officially started rolling out its improved PSSR technology across a range of games. Several partners have already implemented Sony’s improved upscaler into their PlayStation 5 Pro games, and more game upgrades are on the way.

PSSR upgrades are now available in a range of new games, including Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill F, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Alan Wake 2, Control, Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Crimson Desert will launch with Sony’s improved PSSR this week, and both Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 will receive improved PSSR updates over the coming weeks.

Sony has noted enhanced image stability, clarity, and fine detail with its new PSSR version. Simply put, PlayStation 5 Pro games simply look better with Sony’s new PSSR upscaler.

Today’s PS5 system software update introduces broad support for the upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), delivering enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.

PSSR is an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals. With this latest evolution, image reconstruction is more precise, motion stability is improved, and developers have greater flexibility to balance performance and fidelity on PS5 Pro.

PSSR Upgrade

Using Sony’s new “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option, PS5 Pro users can upgrade PS5 Pro games to the latest PSSR version. This allows unpatched PS5 Pro games to use Sony’s new upscaler to achieve higher levels of image quality. However, without an official game integration, Sony cannot guarantee a good experience, which is why this is an optional upgrade. Some games may have unexpected visual effects.

If you’d like to see how some of your other games work with the new PSSR, you can apply it to all PS5 Pro games that support PSSR today. While results may vary by title, many games may see improvements in clarity and image stability. If it results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn it off at any time.

Sony has confirmed that its improved PSSR tech is the result of its collaboration with AMD on Project Amethyst. Sony has confirmed that “AMD’s next FSR update” will bring “these advancements” to AMD’s upscaling technology. This implies that Sony’s improved version of PSSR has features that AMD’s FSR 4 upscaler lacks.

Also, please note that the algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. This upgraded PSSR represents the very latest innovations in our co-developed technology; stay tuned for AMD’s next FSR update that will bring these advancements to even more players around the world!
