Intel is planning “another Raptor Lake Refresh” – Leaker claims

Intel reportedly plans to extend LGA-1700’s lifespan with “another Raptor Lake Refresh”

According to the leaker Jaykihn, Intel is reportedly planning to release “another Raptor Lake Refresh” to extend the lifespan of its LGA1700 CPU socket. This follows Intel’s effort to release more LGA1700 motherboards that support DDR4 and/or DDR5 memory. Given the world’s ongoing memory shortage, Raptor Lake has become a popular platform for Intel, despite its age.

Given Raptor Lake’s use of Intel’s older 7nm (Intel 7) process node, creating more Raptor Lake CPUs could be a way for Intel to address CPU supply shortages. Newer Intel Raptor Lake CPUs use TSMC silicon, and TSMC is capacity-constrained due to the world’s huge demand for AI processors and supporting products. Resurrecting Raptor Lake could help Intel address its supply shortfall and better utilise its older fabs.

According to Jaykihn, Intel should launch these new Raptor Lake CPUs in “early 2027”. It is currently unknown how these new CPUs will be branded and sold. Will this be an OEM-only product, or will Intel be releasing new LGA-1700 CPU models for the DIY PC market? Intel has already refreshed its Raptor Lake lineup with its 14th Generation Core CPU lineup. Will this new refresh use “Core Ultra” branding?

Resurrecting Raptor Lake may be a way to alleviate its CPU supply shortfall while giving PC makers more options. DDR4 memory is much less expensive than DDR5, making LGA-1700 CPUs attractive options for many customers. Even today, Intel’s Raptor Lake CPUs are strong performers, so it makes sense for Intel to bring them back, given the advantages such flexible CPUs can give them.
