Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will have no co-op campaign – Thank God!

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is launching this year, and it’s coming to Switch 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been officially unveiled by Infinity Ward, who confirmed that the game will feature a fully single-player campaign, unlike Black Ops 7. The studio also confirmed that the game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Switch 2. Yes, for the first time, Call of Duty is launching on Switch 2 as a lead platform. All versions of Modern Warfare 4 are launching on October 23rd.

Modern Warfare 4 will be unlike all Call of Duty games before it. For starters, the game is set around a conflict between North and South Korea, a setting the series has never explored. Additionally, the game is abandoning the “bloom accuracy” system that’s used by basically all FPS titles. This system is where bullets fire randomly into a random position within a circle/reticle. In Modern Warfare 4, the game will use a new deterministic system that fires bullets where the gun is pointing. This links bullet placement to animations, requiring a rework of Call of Duty’s animations. This will have gameplay implications, as players will be able to better account for recoil in-game.

This year’s Call of Duty will feature a full single-player campaign, a DMZ multiplayer extraction mode, and traditional multiplayer. No co-op campaign or zombies mode.

A more complex Call of Duty

In multiplayer, more physics-based objects will be available for interaction, such as fire hydrants and volumetric smoke. This means that environments will be less static. This extra interactivity comes with the move to modern platforms. MW4 will not be coming to PS4 and Xbox One.

From the looks of it, the Call of Duty series has received a major rework. Core systems have changed, and abandoning last-generation consoles has resulted in increased game complexity and graphical fidelity. If you wanted Call of Duty to change after Black Ops 7, you’ve got what you wished for. This isn’t a copy/paste Call of Duty game, it’s something fresh.
