Nanya invests $10.7 billion in Fab5A to make EUV-class DRAM in 2027

Nanya’s new 5A fab is due to start producing DRAM wafers next year

Nanya, a Taiwanese DRAM manufacturer, has committed NT$346.6 billion ($10.7 billion US) to complete its 5A Fab. This fab is already under construction and is due to start producing EUV-class DRAM in 2027. This investment is said to be Nanya’s largest investment in Taiwan’s DRAM industry in over a decade.

Wafer production will start in the second half of 2027, with capacity ramping to 30,000 Wafer Starts Per Month (WSPM) in 2028 and 35,900 wafer starts per month in 2029. At full capacity, this fab should be able to achieve 45,000 WSPM.

This new fab will produce 10nm-class DRAM, with pilot production of 1C memory already underway. Newer 1D and 1E memory is in development.

The 5A fab is planned with a full capacity of 45,000 WSPM and total capital expenditures of approximately US$16 billion. 10nm-class technology (i.e. 1C, 1D and 1E) and EUV will be deployed, with wafer input commencing in the second half of 2027. Capacity is expected to ramp to 30,000 WSPM in 2028 and 35,900 WSPM in 2029.

NANYA

When it comes to memory, every little helps

Nanya is a relatively small player within the memory market. The company has only a 1.6% market share and primarily focuses on legacy memory technologies. With rising DDR4 and DDR3 memory prices, Nanya has managed to increase its quarterly revenue by 60% to over $1.55 billion (US). According to Trendforce, DDR5 only accounts for around 10% of Nanya’s current revenue. Fab 5A should increase Nanya’s DDR5 memory production capacity. Nanya is also reportedly ready to qualify its LPDDR5 memory with customers later this year.

While Nanya is a small player, its new fab will help alleviate global shortages. Winbond, another Taiwanese DRAM producer, has also committed to doubling its DRAM bit production (total Gigabytes produced).
