Naoki Hamaguchi, the Game Director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, has confirmed he expects the game to be around 200GB at launch. This will make it one of the largest games ever produced and impossible to ship on disc.
While Square Enix has previously shipped games across two Blu-ray discs, that won’t be the case with Revelation. The game’s physical version will require additional downloads. When asked why, Hamaguchi said he didn’t want to “compromise” the game by limiting its storage footprint.
Despite the game’s size, Revelations will be available physically. Despite the need for additional downloads, Square Enix wanted to continue offering a physical version of its game. That said, the disc alone won’t be enough to play the game.
You recently confirmed that all physical versions of Revelation will require additional downloads because you didn’t want to ‘compromise’ the game in terms of file size. Does that mean that the game download will be larger than the two Blu-ray discs previous entries shipped on?
In a word, yes. Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game. I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.
One thing I want to say is, even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product. That was really important to us. Trust me!
At 200GB, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could be the largest standalone game to ever be released. That said, Call of Duty installs can easily exceed 300GB when you add Warzone and other optional downloads. Microsoft Flight Simulator can also be over 200 GB. ARK: Survival Evolved can also have a 300GB-500GB install size if all DLCs and high-resolution assets are installed.
With SSD storage becoming increasingly expensive, releasing a 200GB game could be challenging for many gamers. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will undoubtedly be a huge RPG, but with a standard PS5 having 825GB of storage and an Xbox Series S having 512GB of storage, many gamers will need to uninstall several games to make space for Revelation. For Switch 2 users, gamers will almost certainly need to invest in a MicroSD Express card to install Revelation, as the console itself has 256GB of storage.
