SEGA joins Xbox’s Disc-To-Digital program
SEGA has joined Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program, giving the program a huge boost
Earlier this month, Microsoft started rolling out its Xbox Disc-to-Digital program to Xbox Insiders. This program gives owners of supported physical Xbox games access to digital game licenses, which remain unlocked as long as users keep ownership of their game discs. This week, SEGA has joined Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program, bolstering the program’s supported game library. Now, almost 1,600 games support Disc-to-Digital.
The xct.live project has been documenting Disc-to-Digital game support. Over the past few days, many SEGA games have been confirmed as supporting Disc-to-Digital. Right now, most SEGA games that don’t list Disc-to-Digital support were tested more than a week ago, before SEGA joined the program.
Xbox Disc-to-Digital supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games, but not all games are compatible. Microsoft says that game eligibility can vary depending on “technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, or other factors”. Now that SEGA has given its consent, its games are now officially supported.
With Disc-to-Digital, physical Xbox game owners no longer need to insert their discs every time they want to play them. For gamers who enjoy playing a variety of games, this can be a huge time-saver.
If every other Sega game gets confirmed as a yes…
That's 44 more games for the Disc to Digital program
Which would take us to:
🟩 1585 Yes
🟥 205 no

Will Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox include a disc drive?
If Microsoft’s Disc-to-Digital implies anything, it’s that their next-generation console may not support physical media. The main benefit of Disc-to-Digital is that Xbox gamers can carry their game collections forward. If Microsoft’s next Xbox supported discs, this would not be necessary. While Disc-to-Digital has other benefits, like reducing the need to swap discs as often, its main value will only show up when gamers move to digital-only consoles.
Disc-to-Digital does have some tangential benefits. It gives Xbox Series S owners access to last-generation disc-based games, as long as they also own an Xbox One. It also gives gamers access to PC copies of games, provided they’re Xbox Play Anywhere titles.
According to xct.live, 85% of Xbox One/Series X games support Disc-to-Digital. This percentage may grow as more games are tested, and more publishers join the program.
