Marvel’s Wolverine hits 20 FPS on PC through PS5 Emulation

Marvel’s Wolverine has not reached gameplay on PC, with framerates hitting 20 FPS

Last week, Marvel’s Wolverine became bootable on PC using the KyTyPS5 emulator. Now, one week later, Marvel’s Wolverine has reached gameplay at up to 20 FPS. While the game is far from playable, it’s hard to deny that PlayStation 5 emulation has progressed rapidly.

Unreal Gaming PC has released a 15-minute gameplay video of Marvel’s Wolverine running on PC through KyTyPS5. The emulator ran on a system with an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU and an Nvidia RTX 4080 GPU. For the most part, the game ran at 5-13 FPS. Framerates were highly unstable, and stutters were very frequent.

Note that this emulator utilises all of the RTX 4080’s 16GB frame buffer. Unreal Gaming PC believes this is a bottleneck preventing their system from achieving higher framerates. Future updates to KyTyPS5 should lower its memory utilisation, potentially boosting its performance dramatically.

Since Sony stopped releasing its first-party single-player exclusives on PC, emulation may be the only way that PC gamers will ever play Marvel’s Wolverine on their chosen platform. Sony killed PlayStation PC. In doing so, Sony created demand for a PS5 emulator.

Right now, KyTyPS5 has limited game compatibility and is far from as usable as more mature emulators like RPCS3 (PS3), Dolphin (Wii/GameCube), and PCSX2 (PS2). That said, at its current rate of progress, some of Sony’s first-party exclusives may be fully playable on PC before long.

The rise of strong PS5 emulation on PC should concern Sony. The risk of game piracy is considerable. That said, those concerns could be easily addressed by officially releasing games on PC. If PlayStation games arrive on PC in a reasonable timeframe and without major issues, PC gamers will buy Sony’s games. Without official PC versions, many gamers will explore other options. As Valve’s Gabe Newell once said, “Piracy is almost always a service problem”.
