Xbox launches new “Cloud playtime” streaming packs
Xbox Cloud Gaming now has dedicated “Cloud playtime” packs
Microsoft has made changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming, limiting Game Pass subscribers to 15 hours of streaming per month (or less, depending on your tier). Now, Microsoft has released “Cloud playtime” packs that unlock a set amount of Xbox Cloud playtime, with 10-hour, 25-hour, and 50-hour packs. These packs are available to Xbox players without Xbox Game Pass and are available now in preview ahead of a full rollout next month.
Xbox Cloud playtime is available to Insiders at introductory launch prices below:
- 10hrs for $3.99
- 25hrs for $7.99
- 50hrs for $11.99
These Cloud Playtime packs promise users an ad-free cloud gaming experience with shorter wait times and high streaming quality. These packs are also available until they are used. Your available playtime will disappear only after you use it. Xbox Insiders can also try a free version of Microsoft’s cloud gaming service that features ads and lower stream quality levels.
Since these new Cloud Gaming packs don’t require Xbox Game Pass, gamers will need to own some games to access them through Xbox Cloud. Alternatively, they can play free-to-play titles. That said, many of those games will require Game Pass Core to access multiplayer.
While Microsoft’s Game Pass Cloud Gaming limits are frustrating, the service needs to be profitable. Xbox’s Cloud playtime packs give gamers low-cost access to game streaming, and the price is based on hours used. It isn’t a monthly subscription. Hopefully, this usage model will make Xbox Cloud more viable and allow Xbox to improve the service for gamers. Remember, it’s only a matter of time before Xbox Cloud needs an Xbox “Helix” upgrade.
As an alternative to lugging your Xbox console everywhere you want to game, Xbox Cloud streaming is a solid alternative. Yes, it’s limited to places where you can get a good internet connection. That said, it is a good option for gaming while travelling.
