AMD Confirms that 3rd Gen Threadripper is “definitely” coming

I’d hate to say we told you so, but… Yes, AMD’s Lisa Su has confirmed that Ryzen 3rd Generation Threadripper processors are coming, dismantling the rumours that AMD planned to kill off their Threadripper platform after the release of Zen 2-based Ryzen (AM4) and EPYC processors.

Below is a quote from PC World, where AMD’s CEO confirmed that their Threadripper 3000 series processors have not been cancelled.

You know. it’s very interesting, some of the things that circulate on the Internet—I don’t think we ever said that Threadripper was not going to continue—it somehow took on a life of its own on the Internet,
You will see more [Threadripper] from us; you will definitely see more.

Rumours of Threadripper’s demise flowed from several news outlets after references to the processors were removed from AMD’s 2019 client roadmap, though we noted at the time that AMD’s roadmap changes were better explained by other reasons, given a shift in focus from future products launches to client system sales in AMD’s revised slides.

If Threadripper 3000 series processors release in 2019, they will launch very late in the year, making their inclusion in client system sales data for 2019 pointless, given their low sales volume and late launch. Now that AMD has confirmed that Threadripper 3rd Generation processors are coming, we can finally put to bed this needless speculation.

In another comment, AMD’s Lisa Su hinted at increased core counts for Threadripper 3rd Generation processors, stating that “If mainstream is moving up, then Threadripper will have to move up”. AMD’s Ryzen 3rd Generation processors up their core counts from a maximum of eight cores to twelve, which makes it likely that AMD plans to launch Threadripper processors with more than 32 cores.

Our guess is that AMD plans to release Threadripper processors with 48 cores and 96 threads, though core counts up to 64 are possible, given how Threadripper’s design is based on EPYC.

Given the performance improvements that AMD plans to offer with their Ryzen 3rd Generation processors, we can expect AMD’s Ryzen 3rd Generation Threadripper processors to be equally impressive, packing higher core clock speeds, and the same IPC and architectural improvements that we have seen in AMD’s other Zen 2 processor designs.
