AMD has updated their processor warranty to support 3rd party cooling solutions

For the past few days, AMD has received a lot of criticism for their PIB (Processor in Box) warranty terms, which read that the company’s limited warranty would be “null and void ” if the owner used the processor with “any heatsink/fan other than the one provided herewith”.

These terms stated that AMD would not maintain their processor warranty if owners made use of 3rd party non-bundles heatsinks, though after becoming aware of the issue the company has since updated their warranty’s terms.

AMD’s PiB warranty terms now state that 3rd party coolers are supported, provided the heatsink is made within AMD’s publically available specifications. In short, AMD will support their warranty if their CPUs are cooled using a socket-compatible cooling solution.

This Limited Warranty shall be null and void if the AMD microprocessor which is the subject of this Limited Warranty is used with any heatsink/fan (HSF) that does not support operation of the AMD processor in conformance with AMD’s publicly available specifications. Use of HSF solutions determined by AMD as incapable of such performance or which are determined to have contributed to the failure of the processor shall invalidate the warranty.

This move has made AMD’s warranty terms a lot more consumer-friendly, so kudos to the Reddit users who initially brought this issue to AMD’s attention.

One thing to note is that AMD will void their warranty if they deem that the use of a 3rd party cooler contributed to the failure of a processor, though such damage is unlikely given how capable AMD’s bundled cooling solutions are for Ryzen 2nd Generation processors. It is doubtful that any end users will be using less robust cooling solutions with Ryzen, making such damage unlikely.
