AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2nd Generation X and WX specifications leak
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2nd Generation X and WX specifications leak
At Computex, AMD revealed the core/thread count of their Threadripper 2nd Generation processors, the fact that they offered Ryzen 2nd Generation features and the series’ use of AMD’s Zen architecture and GlobalFoundries’ 12nm process node.Â
Specifications of these new processors have now leaked via Videocardz, revealing the clock speeds of each processor, their TDP and their retail pricing. This leak also indicates why some of these processors will be known as X-series while others will be known as WX-series SKUs.Â
To start things off with the basics, WX series SKUs are processors that offer 24-32 core setups and a TDP of 250W. AMD’s marketing line on the matter is that these processors are designed for “creators and innovators”, whereas their lower TDP Threadripper X-series models are designed for “enthusiasts and gamers”. This lines up well with the theory that the W stands for Workstation.Â
The highest clocked member of AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 2nd Generation lineup is their Ryzen Threadripper 2950X, which offers a base clock of 3.5GHz and a boost clock of 4.4GHz. This clock speed boost, when combined with Ryzen 2nd Generation improvements like precision boost 2.0 and memory latency reductions, will allow 2nd Generation Threadripper processors to offer a lot more raw performance than its predecessor, the Threadripper 1950X.Â
Pricing-wise, Threadripper 2nd Generation processors will release with lower prices than their last-generation counterparts, with AMD’s 32-core model being priced at $1,799, a price tag that is similar to Intel’s 18-core i9-7980XE, delivering customers a lot more value for money than Intel’s premium SKU.Â
AMD Ryzen Threadripper | Cores/Threads | Base Clock | Boost Clock | TDP | Launch Price |
Threadripper 2990WX | 32/64 | 3.0GHz | 4.2GHz | 250W | $1,799 |
Threadripper 2970WX | 24/48 | 3.0GHz | 4.2GHz | 250W | $1,299 |
Threadripper 2990X | 16/32 | 3.5GHz | 4.4GHz | 180W | $899 |
Threadripper 2920X | 12/24 | 3.5GHz | 4.3GHz | 180W | $649 |
Threadripper 1950X | 16/32 | 3.4GHz | 4GHz | 180W | $999 |
Threadripper 1920X | 12/24 | 3.5GHz | 4GHz | 180W | $799 |
Threadripper 1900X | 8/16 | 3.8GHz | 4GHz | 180W | $549 |
 Â
According to Videocardz, AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 2nd generation processors will release later this month, starting with their extreme-end 32-core 2990WX SKU, which will be followed by their 2950X and 2970X and later their 2920X.Â
