ASUS has officially revealed two new entries into their HEDT motherboard lineups, both of which are explicitly designed to get the most out of Intel X299 and AMD’s X399 motherboard platforms. Meet the ASUS ROG X399 Zenith Extreme Alpha and the ROG Rampage VI Extreme Omega, both of which are primed for extreme overclocking

While both platforms find their origins in workstation-grade hardware, ASUS has stated that this pair of motherboards is aimed at “the most discerning gamers, enthusiasts, and overclockers”, as evidenced by the large VRM heatsinks that can be seen on both motherboard designs. These upgrades are a welcome sight, especially for those who want to overclock AMD’s Threadripper WX series chips, as VRM temps could be seen as a limiting factor for ASUS’ original Zenith when used with AMD’s ultra-high-end chips.

On both the X399 Zenith Alpha and the X299 Rampage VI Extreme Omega offer 16 power stages over eight phases, with both motherboards utilising twin 8-pin EPS power connectors to deliver clean power to AMD’s Threadripper and Intel’s Core-X processors.

Both motherboards also feature ASUS DIMM.2 modules, with both boards coming with a single DIMM.2 slot that can be used to connect two PCIe 4x M.2 devices to the system. Both motherboards also feature Aquantia AQC-107 10G LAN ports as well as an ASUS Aura Sync LiveDash 1.3-inch OLED screen on each board’s I/O cover.

Each of these motherboards acts as consumer flagships for their respective platforms, offering support for 128GB of DRAM while offering full access to each platforms array of PCIe lanes. In the table below are the specifications of both motherboards, including their PCIe slot options and their M.2/NVMe storage options.

ASUS has stated that both the X399 Zenith Extreme Alpha and the Rampage VI Extreme Omega will become available sometime this month. ASUS did not reveal the pricing of either motherboard.

Both of these motherboards are an encouraging sight to see from ASUS, especially the ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha, which seemingly addresses a major criticism that we had with their existing X399 motherboard lineup, at least with regards to hardware configurations AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 24-core and 32-core models. The large VRM heatsink should enable overclocking with relative ease with AMD’s high core count processors, assuming that everything works as it should.
