Intel’s upcoming 9th Generation processors are reportedly offering users insanely high overclocks, with CPU.ZOL reporting that an Intel i7 9700K has been overclocked to 5.5GHz, a full 10% higher than what is typically achieved on 8th Generation Coffee Lake CPUs.

Previous leaks have indicated that Intel i7 9700K will feature eight cores and eight threads, delivering an increased core count over its predecessor, the i7 8700K while eschewing hyperthreading, a first for desktop-grade i7 series processors.

This overclocking feat was reportedly achieved using a water cooled system, which featured an ASRock Z370 Professional Gaming motherboard and G.Skill DDR4 memory. At this time the voltages required for such a high overclock are unknown, assuming that this overclock is legitimate.

Intel’s high-end 9th Generation processors are rumoured to be soldered, providing the series with improved thermal dissipation. A must for ultra-high-end overclocking.

This overclock is accompanied by some Cinebench scores, revealing a single-threaded score of 250 points and a multi-threaded score of 1827 points. These scores are a significant improvement over our i7 8700K overclocking results, which presented us single threaded and multi-core results of 221 and 1679 points respectively when we initially reviewed the processor.

If these results prove accurate and applicable to Intel’s 9th Generation as a whole, Intel will have released a processor that many would describe as an “overclockers dream”, where worthy performance gains are achievable over stock and clock speeds increase beyond what was possible on previous-generation models.
