Intel reveals their 9th Generation Coffee Lake S processors

Intel has officially confirmed their plans to released 9th Generation 9000-series processors, releasing previously unannounced processor codenames within their latest Meltdown/Spectre Microcode Guidance update PDF.

This PDF Confirms that Intel’s upcoming i5-9400, i5-9400T, i5-9500, i5-9600 and i5-9600K will all use Coffee Lake-S (6+2) silicon, the same silicon used to crease today’s i5/i7 Coffee Lake 6-core processors. This update also confirms that Intel will be using their Coffee Lake-S (4+2) silicon to create their i3-9000 and i3-9100 CPUs.

No i7 series processors are mentioned in this microcode update, though this makes sense given the likelihood that Intel’s i7 9700K will be an 8-core processor, which will make use of Coffee Lake S (8+2) series silicon.

With their 9000 series, Intel is left in an exciting position. They could release both i7 and i9 class processors with their 9th generation, delivering i3’s with four cores/threads, i5 processors with six cores/threads, i7 CPUs with eight cores/threads and i9 series processors with eight cores and hyperthreading.

What we believe is more likely is that Intel will release their processors with Hyperthreading on all of their i3, i5 and i7 series processors, segmenting their i-series processors by core count alone, offering i3 processors with 4 cores with hyperthreading, i5 CPUs as six-core processors with hyperthreading and i7 class processors with eight cores and hyperthreading. This will make Intel’s core/thread counts even with AMD’s Ryzen series processors, and turn their 9th generation i3’s into what were previously 7th generation i7’s.

Intel reveals their 9th Generation Coffee Lake S processors

The reason why Intel’s Coffee Lake S (8+2) series processors are not mentioned on this list remains unclear, though Intel has previously stated that they were planning to release products with “In-Silicon” fixes for Meltdown and Spectre in 2018, making microcode updates unnecessary if Coffee Lake S (8+2) already contains fixes in silicon. Alternatively, Intel’s microcode may not be ready for release yet.
