Ryzen may support ECC memory at launch

According to some leaked AM4 PRIME X370-Pro specifications from ASUS, AMD’s Ryzen series of CPUs will support ECC memory at launch and support DDR4 memory speeds of up to 2666MHz by default.

Support for ECC memory seems to be exclusive to AMD’s Ryzen CPUs, with AMD’s 7th generation A-series APUs and Athlon series CPUs lacking support for ECC memory and memory speeds of over 2400MHz by default.

Error-correcting code memory (ECC memory) is a memory type that can detect and correct common types of memory corruption, making this memory type important when used in high-end workstations, servers and other data critical applications.

Ryzen may support ECC memory at launch

AMD supporting ECC memory on their desktop Ryzen platforms will make them the CPU maker of choice when home users create their own workstations, FreeNAS file servers and other system types that can benefit from ECC memory.

Right now ECC memory support is restricted to select CPU and motherboard platforms, often coming with s price premium over standard desktop-grade hardware. At this time it is unknown if all Ryzen CPU will support ECC memory, or if it will be locked behind specific SKUs. Previous rumours have suggested that AMD has Ryzen Pro-series SKUs, which may be the only SKUs to offer ECC memory support.
