If you have been eager to look into the performance of AMD’s new Raven Ridge Ryzen 3 2200G and Rzyen 5 2400G, you will likely have come across reported overclocks of 4.56GHz, or another similar clock speed, leading to many rumours that AMD’s latest CPUs are overclocking monsters.

Some will say that the Ryzen 5 2400G can overclock to 4.5GHz in its sleep, and that is a problem. This is not a real overclock, but a result of the same Ryzen “sleep bug” that previously hit AMD’s original Ryzen/Summit Ridge chip designs. This bug affects system times and causes Windows to think that time is moving slower, resulting in higher reported clock speeds and increases in some benchmark scores.

In some benchmarks like Cinebench, the Windows timer is used to judge how long test takes to complete, resulting from higher benchmark scores when this timer is slowed down. The test takes the same amount of real time to complete but in the eyes of the software it finished faster, creating a what can look like a 4.56GHz overclock and reports scores like a 4.56GHz overclock, but in reality, it is a lower clock speed which has found itself in a distorted time zone.

Right now these “sleep bug” issues have only been found on certain motherboards, making it likely that this problem will disappear with future BIOS updates. This bug will likely see a similar fate to its original Ryzen/Summit Ridge counterpart.

In our testing, both our Raven Ridge Ryzen 3 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G samples were able to achieve clock speeds of 4GHz, which is an overclocking limit that has been seen by several other reviewers. Some CPUs will clock higher, while others will clock lower, but don’t expect to see a vastly different overclocking experience to vanilla Ryzen, at least in the CPU department.
