AMD has discontinued their groundbreaking Mantle API

The Mantle API first came to light in 2013, an AMD-made rendering API which was designed to deliver PC gamers more performance by giving developers the opportunity to add closer to the metal optimisations to their games.

AMD’s Mantle can be considered as a precursor to modern graphical APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan, a force which aimed to push game development past DirectX 11 and OpenGL.

While Mantle’s development ended in 2015, its legacy lives on within Vulkan, which is a Mantle-derived API from the Kronos Group. AMD contributed their Mantle API to the Khronos Group, knowing that their API would never receive widespread adoption due to its AMD-only nature. Using Mantle as a baseline, Khronos created the Vulkan API, which has been used to create games such as DOOM (2016), RAGE 2, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus and improve the performance of titles such as DOTA 2 and No Man’s Sky.

With the release of Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.5.1, AMD has officially dropped support for Mantle, bringing an end to the company’s groundbreaking API. Those who wish to utilise the legacy API will need to install older drivers onto their systems, Radeon Software 19.4.3 or older.

AMD’s Mantle API was only supported in seven shipping PC titles, though its development is what helped bring about games such as Oxide Games’ Ashes of the Singularity, which relies on the multi-threaded nature of modern graphical APIs to offer stable performance.
