AMD has lost a lot of ground in the GPU market over the years, with Nvidia becoming overwhelmingly dominant in the mobile market thanks to the power efficiency of their recent hardware generations.

With Vega Mobile, AMD plans to offer notebook makers a product that provides high-performance levels, respectable levels of power consumption and a small form factor, utilising HBM2 memory to save PCB space, making it usable Thin and Lite notebooks. This factor is likely to be why Apple chose to employ AMD’s Vega PRO Mobile silicon in their upcoming high-end MacBook Pro models

Today, we have some performance figures for AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics card, courtesy of @TUM_APISAK, who uncovered benchmarking results for the graphics card on the 3DMARK 11 database. Here, we can see that the Radeon Pro Vega 20 offers a 57-72% performance gain over the Radeon RX 560X (which is available on some of today’s MacBook Pro notebooks), even when used in conjunction with a lower-end Intel processor.

Overall, the Radeon Pro Vega 20 offers a 64.3% performance advantage over the Radeon RX 560X in terms of overall graphics score, matching Apple’s claims of a 60% performance advantage.

What remains to be seen is whether or not OEMs, outside of Apple, will add AMD’s Radeon Vega Mobile graphics card into their future notebook designs. AMD appears to be offering a lot of performance in a small form factor, but will it be enough to move OEMs away from Nvidia?
