AMD reveals Radeon Pro Vega 20 and Pro Vega 16 mobile graphics cards

At CES 2018, AMD revealed a graphics card called the Radeon Vega Mobile, a miniaturised version of the company’s RX Vegx 64 silicon that ships with a single stack of HBM2 memory and delivers a large amount of gaming/compute performance while maintaining low levels of power consumption.

With the “Mobile” name it was clear that this graphics card was intended to be used with future notebooks, with Apple’s MacBook series acting as an ideal candidate for an upgraded Radeon graphics card.

Today, AMD has officially revealed their Radeon Pro Vega series of mobile graphics cards, combining HBM2 memory and their Vega graphics architecture to deliver high levels of graphics performance. So far, AMD has unveiled Radeon Pro Vega 20 and Pro Vega 16 models, which are expected to offer twenty and sixteen active CUs (compute units) respectively.

Apple has since confirmed that their new MacBook Pro will have the option to include AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega graphics hardware, with Apple reporting up to a 60% upgrade in graphics performance over their previous design. This new MacBook model will become available in late November.

Apple also today announced new MacBook Pro graphics options that will bring powerful Radeon Pro Vega graphics to MacBook Pro for the first time. These new graphics options deliver up to 60 percent faster graphics performance for the most demanding video editing, 3D design and rendering workloads.

AMD reveals Vega mobile, an AMD discrete GPU for notebooks

At CES AMD has showcased a chip that the company has called Vega Mobile, a discrete GPU that is designed to offer low-power operation, a small footprint thanks to HBM2 memory and provide VR-ready performance. At this time the exact specifications of this new graphics card are unknown.

For Apple, this new SKU makes a lot of sense, as their iMac Pro currently offers Radeon Pro Vega graphics. Adding Vega graphics to the MacBook Pro will give more developers the incentive they need to take advantage of Vega’s advanced features, such as Rapid Packed Math.

At this time it is unknown whether or not we will see AMD’s Radeon Vega Mobile graphics processor outside of Apple products. We have asked AMD for more information about this product.
