AOC reveals their latest AGON3 FreeSync 2 monitor

AOC has revealed their new AGON3 series of gaming displays, offering what they list as an ultra-fast 0.5ms response time what can otherwise be seen as impressive specifications for their respective prices.

The most interesting of the two displays that have been revealed is the AG273QCX, which offers support for FreeSync 2. This means that it supports FreeSync with LFR (Low Framerate Compensation) technology and AMD’s own HDR specifications. The HDR support required for FreeSync 2 is not as high as full HDR10, which means that FreeSync 2 displays can be delivered at more affordable pricing and help make HDR more affordable.

These display specifications are now possible thanks to new display panels made by AU Optronics, the same display maker that are creating panels for Nvidia’s G-Sync HDR 4K 144Hz monitors, offering sub-1ms response times and support for a wider colour gamut and HDR images.

In an interview with PCGAMESN, AOC’s Alfonso Clemente says the following;

We were talking with AUO and they have a new panel,

Up until now curved monitors were either IPS or VA, which is ok, but the response time was not so great. There’s always some ghosting, some blurring. But now there are curved panels from AU Optronics that allow 0.5ms response time.

I saw this TN panel, they were doing a demonstration in Taipei,” Clemente says, “and the picture quality is probably better than IPS. It’s not quantum dot, you can’t put that on TN, but the quality was really reminiscent of quantum dot. The market has never seen a TN panel with this colour quality. Viewing angles are TN viewing angles, but you don’t care about that.

The FreeSync 2 AG273QCX that is detailed below will come with a high-quality TN panel, coming with what is said to be better colour than an IPS panel but with faster response times. Sadly the poor viewing angles of TN remains, though as a PC display users will not be looking at this display at a wide angle.

There will also be a G-Sync version of this display which will come with a TN panel type and a higher refresh rate of 165Hz. This display will lack HDR support as Nvidia only plans on supporting premium HDR displays with their G-Sync modules, ensuring a high standard of display quality but also higher price tags.

Both of these displays are set to release in the first half of 2018, with the AMD FreeSync 2 version releasing in April for $599 and the Nvidia G-Sync version coming in May for $699.
