ASUS reveals their entry-level VP228QG Gaming Monitor

There will always be room in the market for budget-oriented displays, especially within the gaming market. While some gamers won’t settle for anything less than a high-quality IPS FreeSync/G-Sync monitor with a high refresh rate, other either do not have the money or the time to get the most out of such an investment.

Sometimes value trumps all, getting the most gaming performance for your money while making minimal compromises, this is how many PC gamers start their journeys.

ASUS has released their 21.5-inch VP228QG FreeSync Gaming monitor, a successor to the low-cost ASUS VP228HE (currently available for less than £100) with the addition of AMD FreeSync/VESA Adaptive Sync support with a variable refresh rate (VRR) range of 48-75Hz.

While this variable refresh range is small, it offers a much better experience than a standard 60Hz monitor, delivering a higher framerate experience with no tearing when the user’s framerate is between 48 and 75 FPS. If users optimise their game settings to run at 60 FPS on most occasions, the VRR range of this monitor should be enough to handle any dips in performance.

The VP228QG uses a 21.5-inch 1080p TN panel, which comes with a mon-glare coating and offers 72% coverage of the NTSC colour gamut, support for HDMI, VGA/D-Sub and DisplayPort inputs. This monitor also offers integrated speakers, though as always we recommend standalone speakers if you can afford them.

The VP228QG does not sit in ASUS’ premium Strix or ROG monitor brands, as can be expected by such a comparatively basic display offering.  ASUS has kitted out their VP228QG with 100×100 VESA support, Low Motion Blur technology, ASUS GamePlus technology and support FreeSync/Adaptive Sync.

ASUS has not officially revealed their pricing for the VP228QG, though we expect this display to release at a sub £150 price tag.
