AU Optronics is set to start shipping 8K in 1H 2018

Today 4K TVs are bringing an increasingly common sight, so much so that Au Optronics thinks that it will have 40% market share of the TV market by the end of 2018.

Now AUO is looking beyond 4K, with plans to start shipping 8K displays in the first half of this year, delivering display resolutions that are four times higher than 4K with an expected market penetration of 10% by 2020. 

At CES 2018 we have already seen demand for 8K panels from major manufacturers, with the Japan Olympics in 2020 already being set to be broadcasted at resolutions of up to 8K. The question now is how quickly consumers will adopt 8K, especially after the slow adoption of 4K screens. 

AUO is also set to increase the production of their smaller display sizes, which are most commonly seen in mobile phones and notebooks, with an eye on the automotive market where interactive screens are set to become a lot more common. A lot of this is due to the growth of the electric car market as well as the future introduction of self-driving vehicles.
