Today, AverMedia sits amongst the world’s top producers of consumer video capture devices, finding popularity amongst streamers and content creators alike.

As 2020 approaches, AverMedia has started to tease something new, a capture device that’s capable of recording 4K 60FPS HDR footage externally, moving high-end capture from high-end desktops to mobile devices.

At this time, it is unknown how this external capture device functions, or how it will connect to a PC. All AVerMedia has teased is that such a device is coming in 2020.

AVerMedia’s 4K 60 FPS external capture device will likely require a higher-end version of USB to connect to a PC, at least for 4K 60FPS recording. With this in mind, we think it is likely for AVerMedia’s external 4K 60 FPS HDR capture card to use USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) for PC connectivity, as today’s Live Gamer Ultra GC553 currently uses USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) for 4K 30FPS gameplay.

This also raises the possibility that AVerMedia also has a higher-end internal 4K capture card in the works. A potential candidate for this is a model which supports 4K 120 FPS over HDMI 2.1.

2020 will see the release of HDMI 2.1 devices in the form of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles, which means that capture device makers like AVerMedia and Elgato will need to step up to provide compatible solutions at launch. While AVerMedia’s 4K 60FPS external capture card won’t reach the limits of HDMI 2.1, it nonetheless represents a major step up over other external capture solutions.
