HTC has officially announced their new Vive Pro VR headset, an upgraded version of the company’s existing Vive headset, offering a lighter body, a new strap design, built-in noise cancelling headphones and an upgraded screen resolution of 2880×1600 (1440×1600 per eye). The HTC Vive Pro utilises two OLED displays, with a 78% increase in resolution over the standard Vive headset.

This new headset offers a 78% increase in resolution over the standard HTC Vive, with HTC planning to sell this new headset concurrently with today’s model, in a similar way to how Sony sells and supports both their PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles.

HTC has also revealed that they will be creating their own Wireless Vive Adapter, which is set to release later this year, allowing an HTC Vive of Vive Pro to connect to a PC wirelessly using Intel’s WiGig technology.

The Vive Pro will be available as an “HMD only” upgrade option for existing Vive owners this quarter, with the full headset releasing later this year. HTC has also stated that the new lightweight design will make the headset more comfortable to use for glasses wearers.

This new headset will support SteamVR tracking 2.0, while also offering backwards compatibility with SteamVR tracking 1.0, allowing this new headset to ship with more affordable SteamVR 2.0 base stations.

The pricing and availability of the HTC Vive Pro are currently unknown.
