Intel has plans to make their way into the dedicated graphics market, expanding beyond their integrated graphics solutions to provide both gaming-ready performance to consumers and AI acceleration to enterprise users.

Right now, it seems likely that Intel will reveal dedicated graphics chips in 2020, utilising their Xe graphics architecture to deliver competitive performance levels.

Intel’s move into the graphics market is aimed at both AMD and Nvidia. Intel wants to take market share from Nvidia in the enterprise market with strong AI performance and challenge AMD in the integrated graphics market. With this, Intel intends to secure its position in the enterprise market by offering both CPU and dedicated graphics solutions while also eliminating Radeon graphics as an upside for AMD’s Ryzen APUs and Ryzen Mobile products.

Having hired Raja Koduri, the former leader of AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group, and several other major graphics players, it is clear that Intel is serious about entering the dedicated graphics market. Moving into 2021 Intel has confirmed plans to release 7nm Xe series graphics cards using their Foveros 3D chip technology, revealing a desire to enter the graphics market with technological leadership.

At this time it remains unclear what Intel’s discrete GPU plans are when it comes to the gaming market. Intel is expected to target the mid-range GPU market first, though at this time it is unknown if the company will be able to offer features like raytracing/DXR support on day-1.
