OLED TVs has proven to be very popular amongst gamers, with modern OLED screens offering users 4K resolutions, 120Hz maximum refresh rates, VRR support, HDMI 2.1, and some of the highest quality HDR implementations on the market.

OLED panels offer users an “Infinite Contrast Ratio”, as each pixel on an OLED screen can be turned off to deliver true blacks. While maximum brightness levels may be lower than some LED screens, OLED’s deeper blacks can provide superior results with most HDR content. Sadly, OLED screens have remained a rarity within the monitor market, primarily because OLED screens are mainly produced in large television screen formats, which are unsuitable for desktop use. Thankfully, that’s now changing.

According to a report from Flat Panels HD, Samsung plans to start mass-producing 55-inch and 65-inch Quantum Dot OLED panels for TVs and 34-inch Quantum Dot OLED panels for monitors on November 30th. This move should help to make OLED TVs more common within the TV market and allow 34-inch OLED monitors to make it onto the market. LG is currently dominant within the OLED TV market, making Samsung’s latest OLED screens welcome additions to the market, both within the TV and monitor spaces.

Samsung’s Quantum OLED panels offer users the benefits of Quantum Dot technology and OLED screen technology. These screens use blue OLEDs and utilise Quantum Dots for colour conversion to red and green. In theory, this could deliver Samsung higher levels of image quality than today’s LG OLED panels, though this remains to be seen.

On the LG side, reports continue to fly in about LG’s C2 series of OLED TVs, including a new 42-inch model called the OLED42C2KNA. Currently, LG’s OLED TV lineup only features screen sizes that are 48-inches or larger, which are too large for many customers. This is especially true for PC gamers who want to game on 120Hz OLED panels.

Adding a 42-inch panel to their OLED lineup opens the door towards the development of more large-format OLED gaming displays. 42-inch monitors offer a larger PPI than larger 4K screens and are a much more manageable size for desktop use. While still huge, these screens will be suitable for more users than their 48-inch counterparts. LG’s 48-inch OLED TVs have proven popular amongst PC gamers, and the 42-inch model will be even more popular. Better still is the fact that LG’s 42-inch model should also be cheaper than its 48-inch counterpart.
