Nvidia adds support for 4K Netflix on GTX 10-series GPUs

Nvidia adds support for 4K Netflix on GTX 10-series GPUs, but right now this support is severely limited. First of all this support is limited to a driver that is exclusive to members of the Windows Insider Program, driver version 381.74, with support being limited to GTX 10-series GPUs with more than 3GB of VRAM. Â

This means that this functionality will not be supported on Nvidia’s 2GB GTX 1050 GPUs, with this functionality only being available on Microsoft’s Edge browser or the Netflix app from the Windows 10 Store. Users will also need to use HDCP 2.2 displays, which could be problematic for those that use multiple displays or older displays. Â Â

At the time of writing 4K Netflix is only readily usable on Intel Kaby Lake powered PCs, and we can see why given how strict these requirements are for beta Nvidia support. At this time 4K Netflix is not available to those using AMD GPUs.Â

Right now, the playback of premium 4K content is highly restricted on PC, be it Netflix Streaming or the Direct playback of 4K UltraHD Blu-Ray movies. Hopefully in time using this content will become easier, though for now it is restricted to select OS’ and hardware configurations, leaving those with older PCs in the dark.Â
