Nvidia claims that its RTX 2080 Max-Q is more powerful than a next-generation console

At their GTC China 2019 keynote, Nvidia claimed that it’s RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics card is more powerful than a next-generation console, a questionable claim given the many unknowns surrounding Sony/Microsoft’s next-generation hardware.

Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang spoke about the gaming horsepower within Lenovo’s Geforce RTX powered Y740 notebook, though he didn’t reference the console market directly in his speech.

While Nvidia’s claims are questionable, it is likely that Nvidia’s RTX 2080 will be more powerful than one of the next-generation consoles, especially if Microsoft releases its low-end “Lockhart” offering. The reality here is that Nvidia has made this claim knowing that it is not liable if it proves to be false.

Nvidia could be referring to any “next gen console”, which could include anything from Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 to a next-generation handheld system. The long and short of it is that Nvidia’s statement is too vague to mean anything, making this nothing more than a show of confidence from Nvidia. Only time will tell whether or not the confidence is warranted.
