Nvidia RTX 20 series leaks showcase boosted per CUDA core performance

After Nvidia’s Geforce Gaming Celebration livestream, the company hosted an offline event where selected editors and media personalities were provided with more information about Geforce-powered Turing graphics cards.

Videocardz has managed to grab some slides from this event and has leaked them online, listing a review embargo date of September 14th, less than a week before RTX 20 series graphics cards will start to ship. 

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this leak is the slide below, which reveals Turing’s boosted SM performance, with Nvidia listing a 50-60% boost in per CUDA core performance over Pascal, achieving a boost as high as 100% in specific applications like VRMARK. 

While these numbers may be cherry-picked to have the greatest impact, a 50% boost in SM performance is nothing to scoff at. It seems like Nvidia’s redesigned SMs are paying off. Several questions remain, what kind of clock/clock performance gain should we expect from Pascal and will these new SM designs lower Turing’s overclocking potential.

So far, Nvidia’s Turing architecture appears to be an impressive leap over Pascal, though factors like their high pricing and their reliance on Ray-Tracing and AI, instead of traditional shader performance, has left them in a position where many potential customers are priced out of the market and are not willing to accept the transition toward in-game Ray Tracing.
