TecLab creates its own RTX 2080 Ti “Super” with 16Gbps memory

Rumours about Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti Super plans have been circulating for quite some time, with many reports claiming that Nvidia will utilise faster GDDR6 memory to enable a new level of graphics card performance.

The hardware team over a TechLab were tired of waiting for Nvidia to make a move, so they decided to make their own RTX 2080 Ti ‘Super’ graphics card, upgrading their KFA2/Galax RTX 2080 Ti graphics card using 16Gbps GDDR6 memory chips from RTX 2080 Super graphics cards.

We have reported before that Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Super utilises 1Gbps memory chips, which are limited to 15.5Gbps to simplify manufacturing and increase yields. Most RTX 2080 Super graphics cards will, therefore, run with 16Gbps memory with a little overclocking. TechLab had to dismantle two RTX 2080 Super graphics cards to create their custom RTX 2080 Ti ‘Super’ graphics card, resoldering the memory to their RTX 2080 Ti PCBs.

The video below showcases the processes behind creating TechLab’s custom RTX 2080 Ti ‘Super’ graphics card. Thankfully, TechLab’s experiment worked, allowing them to create an RTX 2080 Ti graphics card that could handle memory overclocks as high as 2235MHz, delivering more bandwidth than the memory’s stock 16Gbps rated performance.

Rumour has it that Nvidia plans to release an RTX 2080 Ti Super graphics card in early 2020, though that ultimately depends on when Nvidia plans to release its next-generation graphics products. It would be silly to release an RTX 2080 Ti Super graphics card too close to Nvidia’s next-generation RTX 30 series.
