The PC market will soon be entering the DDR5 era, with Intel being the first to adopt the new memory standard with their Alder Lake series of x86 processors. DDR5 memory plans to deliver faster memory speeds, higher bandwidth levels, new power management features, and increased power efficiency to consumers. For PC enthusiasts, that means more bandwidth and increased overclocking potential. 

Corsair has recently teased their first DDR5 memory DIMMs, VENGEANCE series DRAM modules that will become part of its mainstream DDR5 memory lineup. Sadly, Corsair has not revealed the specifications of these new memory modules, but JEDEC’s DDR5 memory standard starts with speeds of 4800 MT/s and voltages of 1.1V. Module specifications only get higher from there. 

As higher CPU core counts become more commonplace, memory bandwidth has become increasingly constrained on DDR4-powered systems. That is one of the main reasons why higher memory speeds are desired by PC enthusiasts, as higher CPU core counts without an increase in memory bandwidth result in lower per-core memory bandwidth levels. The start of the DDR4 era saw dual-channel DDR4 memory setups paired with Intel’s Skylake quad-core CPUs. Now, AMD pairs two DDR4 memory channels with their 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X.

Another significant change with DDR5 include changes to DDR5’s power management system over DDR4 memory. Instead of relying on motherboards to provide stable power to DRAM modules, DDR5 moves power management circuitry directly onto DRAM modules. This change makes DRAM makers less reliant on motherboard manufacturers but brings more heat-producing components onto DRAM modules. These components include PMICs (Power Management Integrated Circuits).

DDR5’s power management technology will allow memory overclocking to advance, as high-end DRAM modules can be paired with robust power management circuits. The cleaner power offered by these solutions will help DDR5 memory modules remain stable at high speeds. The entrance of DDR5 onto the memory market will make DRAM overclocking a lot more interesting. 

What about DDR5 Dominators?

Corsair’s Dominator series of DDR memory DIMMs have long been popular amongst hardware enthusiasts. Corsair is planning to release DOMINATOR branded DDR5 memory modules, and we hope to hear more about these new high-end DDR5 memory modules soon.
