DRAM prices drop 10% QoQ and are expected to drop further in Q1 2019
With the DRAM market entering an oversupplied state, DRAM manufacturers are already reducing their production targets for 2019, reducing their capacity expansion to cushion the financial blow that will be caused by lower than expected demand. Â
Moving into 2019, DRAMeXchance predicts further price decreases, a change that will be positive for the custom PC market, allowing builders to invest more money into other areas of their PCs while further incentivising PC builders to upgrade to DDR4-based CPU platforms.Â
The average sale price (ASP) of the entire DRAM market is expected to lower by 20% in 2019, a change that is expected to be damaging to all major DRAM suppliers, who have all seen their profits grow significantly in recent years. DRAMeXchange expects DRAM pricing to be “marked down every quarter” of 2019.Â

As a PC builder, it is hard not to be happy with these predictions, as high DRAM pricing has acted as a huge deterrent for PC upgrades in recent years, forcing many PC gamers to forgo CPU upgrades that also require a change to a DDR4-based platform.Â
Lower DRAM pricing, in combination with increased value for money offered by modern high-core count processors, will make 2019 a great year for boutique PC builders. The era of inflated DRAM pricing may be coming to a close.Â
