Amazon will soon start selling Chromecast and Apple TV products

Back in 2015, Amazon delisted Google’s Chromecast from their online storefront. At the time the company stated that they desired to “avoid customer confusion” by removing hardware that didn’t support Amazon Prime Video from their online store, despite the fact that it was always up to them whether or not they developed an app that was compatible with Google’s Chromecast ecosystem.

This move left Amazon without much competition in the in-home streaming front, at least on their online storefront. This change started a feud between Amazon and Google, eventually leading Google to announce that they would be removing support for YouTube from Amazon’s Echo Show and Fire TV devices. The loss of YouTube support has forced Amazon into an awkward position.

Amazon has now confirmed that they will not be selling Apple TV and Google Chromecast devices on their online storefront, bringing an end to their spat with Google. Today, listings are now available for Google Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra devices, as well as Apple’s Apple TV 4K and standard Apple TV products. These devices unavailable for purchase at this time, but stock is expected to become available soon.

This change of heart has likely paused Google’s plans to remove support for YouTube from Amazon’s smart home devices. with google stating that both companies are in “productive discussions” regarding this matter. Let’s hope that this means that we will soon have a Chromecast App for Amazon Prime Video!

Amazon has backed down on their storefront’s self-made monopoly on the content streaming market, providing consumers with more diverse content streaming options on their online store. Hopefully, this is a sign of additional co-operation to come, as most Chromecast owners would love their devices to be able to access Amazon’s online video services.
