Disney/Maker Studios drop Pewdiepie from their multi-channel network after allegations of anti-Semitism, with the YouTuber using anti-Semitic imagery in several videos and allegedly making Nazi references.

Felix Kjellberg, PewdiePie, currently runs the largest channel on YouTube, though in recent years several new channels have overtaken PewdiePie in terms of daily view count and watching time. Felix claims that he does not support “any kind of hateful attitudes” but admits that his jokes were “ultimately offensive”.

A video, which has since been removed from YouTube, shown Felix pay $5 to a pair of Indian men who would “say anything” for cash. These men then held up a sign that said: “Death to all Jews” while saying “subscribe to Keemstar” (a controversial drama YouTuber).

Below is a comment from Maker Studios, a Disney-owned multi-channel network on YouTube, which states that Felix “went too far” in this case.

Although Felix has created a following by being provocative and irreverent, he clearly went too far in this case and the resulting videos are inappropriate,

In other videos, Felix also played parts of the Nazi party anthem and a video where he had shown swastikas that were drawn by fans. Felix says that these videos were jokes and that is “laughable” that anyone would see him as a supporting an anti-Semitic message.

Right now it remains to be seen how much Felix/Pewdiepie will be hurt by this action by Maker Studios, or if Maker themselves see any negative consequences as a result of this action.

Update – YouTube has now reportedly cancelled PewDiePie’s new “Scare PewDiePie” series on YouTube Red and has removed the YouTuber from their “Google Preferred Advertising Program”, which will significantly harm Felix financially. The Google Preferred Advertising program is designed to direct additional ads to YouTube’s most marketable creators, effectively giving certain YouTubers additional Ad revenue.

This action from Google/YouTube will not prevent the YouTuber from monetizing his YouTube channel using regular YouTube ads, though this will no doubt has a huge impact on PewDiwPie’s earnings.
