Samsung starts mass production of their 2nd Generation 10nm FinFET node

Samsung’s Foundry division has ramped up their new 10nm LPP (Low Power Plus) manufacturing node into mass production, delivering their second generation 10nm process with enough manufacturing capacity to service the needs of the mobile market. 

This node delivers superior performance and power efficiency than the company’s first generation 10nm node, with 10nm LPP offering 10% higher performance than 10nm LPE (Low Power Early) with the same power draw or the same performance with 15% less power consumption. Being based on existing 10nm technology has allowed Samsung to develop this new node quickly and offer higher initial yields than 10nm LPE, which is excellent news for anyone who wants to utilise Samsung’s Foundry services. 

Samsung plans to continue evolving their 10nm node further to create a new node that they will call 8nm LPP.  At this time it is now known how much this node improve upon 10nm LPP or LPE. Below is a comment from Ryan Lee, Samsung’s vice president of Foundry marketing. 
 

We will be able to better serve our customers through the migration from 10LPE to 10LPP with improved performance and higher initial yield,

Samsung with its long-living 10nm process strategy will continue to work on the evolution of 10nm technology down to 8LPP to offer customers distinct competitive advantages for a wide range of applications.

With this announcement, Samsung has pledged to ramp up production in their new S3 manufacturing facility, which resides in Hwaseong, South Korea, which will offer technologies including 10nm and future process nodes. Samsung also plans on creating their next-generation 7nm FinFET process at their S3 facility, the company’s first node to use Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) technology.
